The Maglev is a genuine engineering landmark — the train never touches the guideway, and nothing in scheduled passenger service has been timetabled faster. The question is whether it is a good way to get from the airport to your hotel, and that is a different question.
What it actually does#
It runs between Pudong Airport and Longyang Road station, covering just under 30 km in about eight minutes. That is the whole line. At Longyang Road you change to Line 2 or Line 16 to continue into the city.
So the trip is: Maglev, then a change, then a metro ride. Against Metro Line 2 straight through from the airport, the door-to-door difference is much smaller than the speed suggests — and if you are carrying luggage, the change costs you some of what the speed gained.
When it makes sense#
As an experience. Watching the speed display climb is genuinely a thing to have done, and it takes very little time. If you enjoy trains at all, ride it.
One expectation to set, because it disappoints people who have not been told: the 430 km/h figure everyone quotes is the peak the line was built for, not what you will usually see. Most departures now top out at 300 km/h, and only a small number of full-speed runs have been reinstated since 2024. Three hundred is still very fast and the ride is still remarkable, but if the number itself is the point, ask which departures are running at full speed before you pick one.
If you are heading to Pudong anyway. Staying in Lujiazui or on the east bank makes Longyang Road a sensible interchange rather than a detour.
Travelling light. Without heavy bags the change is trivial.
When to skip it#
Heading to Puxi with luggage. Line 2 runs from the airport to People's Square and the Bund area without a change. Simplicity beats speed after a long-haul flight.
Late arrivals. The Maglev does not run as late as the metro, so check it is operating before you plan around it.
The honest summary#
Ride it once, ideally on the way out to the airport when you are not tired and not deciding anything. Take Line 2 on the way in.
