Privacy Policy

What we collect, why, and how to make us stop.

This describes what this site actually does, checked against its own source code rather than written from a template. It is not legal advice: if you operate in a jurisdiction with specific disclosure requirements, have it reviewed.

What we collect#

Analytics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which was chosen because it does not identify you. It records aggregate figures — pages viewed, referring site, approximate country, device type — and Cloudflare states that it stores no cookies or other data on your device for analytics, and does not follow individual visitors between visits using an IP address, a browser fingerprint or anything similar. Query strings are not recorded at all. We use it to see which guides people read and which need work.

Newsletter. If you subscribe, the email address you type and the date you typed it are stored by the mailing-list provider that sends the emails. Nothing else — no name, no location, no reading history, and nothing linking your address to the pages you visited. Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe, after which the address is deleted.

Advertising. None at present. This site currently serves no adverts and loads nothing from an advertising network. If that changes, this page will say so before it happens, and anything that requires your consent will ask for it.

Server logs. Standard web-server logs including IP address, kept for a limited period for security and abuse prevention.

We do not collect names, addresses, payment details or passport information through this website. Bookings made through partner links happen entirely on the partner's own site under their privacy policy.

Cookies#

This site sets no cookies. Not for analytics, not for advertising, not for preferences — none. It stores nothing in your browser's local storage either.

That is unusual enough to be worth explaining: the site is a set of static pages with no accounts and no personalisation, so there is no state to keep, and the analytics we chose deliberately works without any. There is consequently no consent banner, because there is nothing to consent to.

If you have a cookie banner blocker, you will notice it has nothing to do here.

Sharing#

We do not sell personal data and we never will. The only third parties involved are the ones that make the site work: Cloudflare, which serves the pages and provides the aggregate analytics, and the mailing-list provider, which holds subscriber addresses and nothing else.

Retention#

Analytics data is aggregate from the moment it is collected and is kept for six months. Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe, after which they are deleted. Server logs are rotated on a short cycle.

Your rights#

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export the data we hold about you, to object to processing, and to complain to a supervisory authority. To exercise any of these, contact us.

Children#

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes#

Material changes to this policy will be noted with a revised date at the top of the page.
