The Yunnan guide gives Kunming one night and calls it pleasant rather than compelling, a place most travellers use as an arrival point. As a verdict on the sights that is honest and this page will not pretend otherwise: the Stone Forest, Green Lake and the provincial museum are the list, and the list is short.
But the sights are not why Kunming matters, and two of the reasons it does are things you cannot photograph.
The Spring City is a measurement, not a slogan#
Every guide repeats the nickname. Almost none says where it comes from, and it turns out there is something to point at.
On 1 November 2022 the China Meteorological Administration published an evaluation of 人居气候舒适性 (rénjū qìhòu shūshìxìng, climate comfort for human habitation) across mainland China's major cities, carried out by a research group at the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. Its finding:
昆明、拉萨、贵阳、厦门和成都位列年平均气候舒适性最好的前五名
Kunming, Lhasa, Guiyang, Xiamen and Chengdu take the top five places for annual average climate comfort — and Kunming is first. The same study reports that across mainland China's major cities the number of days a year that count as comfortable weather averages 230.5, which is the figure that makes the ranking meaningful rather than merely flattering.
At around 1,900 metres, the altitude is what does it: high enough to cut the summer, low enough to escape the winter, at a latitude that would otherwise be tropical.
The station you can leave the country from#
This is the fact that changes what Kunming is for, and this site has mentioned it exactly once, in a half-sentence.
Kunming is the Chinese terminus of the China–Laos railway's international passenger service. It began on 13 April 2023, running in both directions between Kunming South and Vientiane. The government's own account of the launch:
全程经停昆明南、普洱、西双版纳、磨憨、磨丁、琅勃拉邦、万荣、万象8个车站
Eight stations then — Kunming South, Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, Mohan and Boten (the two border stations), Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Vientiane — with a total journey time, including border clearance, of 10 hours 30 minutes, under a 两地两检 (liǎng dì liǎng jiǎn) arrangement, meaning you are checked on both sides of the frontier rather than once.
It has grown since. From 18 July 2025 a second pair of international trains was added:
昆明与万象间每天的国际旅客列车数量增至4列
Four international trains a day between Kunming and Vientiane — two in each direction — now calling at ten stations, with a total journey time of about ten hours including clearance. The added pair departs Kunming at 10:55 and Vientiane at 12:25, Beijing time.
Two named stops on that line are destinations in themselves: Pu'er, which the tea is named after, and Xishuangbanna, the tropical, culturally Dai south that the Yunnan guide covers. A traveller who thinks of Kunming as an airport misses that the train south is one of the more interesting rides in China before it ever reaches the border.
A global treaty carries the city's name#
In 2021 Kunming hosted the first stage of COP15, the fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The second stage moved to Montreal, and in the early hours of 19 December 2022 it adopted the 昆明-蒙特利尔全球生物多样性框架 (Kūnmíng–Méngtèlì'ěr quánqiú shēngwù duōyàngxìng kuàngjià) — the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework — with China's Minister of Ecology and Environment serving as COP15 President.
That is why a provincial capital most foreign travellers have never heard of appears in the title of the agreement that sets global biodiversity targets to 2030. It is not a sight, and it is the single most consequential thing the city has been the venue for.
What there actually is to see#
Short and worth being honest about. The Yunnan guide lists the three — Green Lake Park in the centre, the provincial museum out in Guandu district, and the Stone Forest at Shilin about ninety minutes away — and this page will not repeat them.
What that list leaves out is the shape of a Kunming day: a city at spring temperature where the outdoor life runs all year, which is why the morning park routine is more visible here than in cities that spend three months indoors. If you have one afternoon and no plan, that is the thing to go and watch.
In practice#
- Give it a night, but give it the right night. As a stop between flights it is thin. As the evening before a train south it is exactly the right place to be — and as the bottom rung of the Yunnan altitude ladder, that night is doing more work than it looks.
- Check which station. Kunming and Kunming South are different places, and the trains that matter here — Jianshui and the international service — go from Kunming South.
- The climate cuts both ways. Around 1,900 m, the sun is strong and the nights are cool all year, and buildings are built for neither extreme.
- The airport is a genuine hub. Changshui is described on the Yunnan guide as a major one, and it is the practical reason so many itineraries touch Kunming at all.
- For the province, not the city, the Yunnan guide has the route — Dali, Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-La.
- Hong Kong and Macau are separate jurisdictions and nothing on this page about the land border to Laos describes crossing into either.
Frequently asked questions#
Why is Kunming called the Spring City?#
Because of its altitude — about 1,900 metres at a subtropical latitude — which gives it mild temperatures year-round. The nickname also has something measurable behind it: a Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences evaluation published by the China Meteorological Administration on 1 November 2022 placed Kunming first among mainland China's major cities for annual average climate comfort, ahead of Lhasa, Guiyang, Xiamen and Chengdu.
Can you take a train from Kunming to Laos?#
Yes. The China–Laos railway has run an international passenger service between Kunming South and Vientiane since 13 April 2023, and since 18 July 2025 there are four such trains a day, two in each direction. The whole journey takes about ten hours including border clearance at Mohan and Boten, and you need a passport and any visa Laos requires of your nationality.
How long does the Kunming to Vientiane train take?#
About ten hours, and that figure includes the time spent clearing the border rather than excluding it. When the service launched in 2023 the quoted time was ten hours thirty minutes over eight stations; the current service calls at ten stations in roughly ten hours.
Is Kunming worth visiting?#
For its sights alone, a night. Its real value is as a base and a starting point: it is the gateway to Yunnan, a major air hub for southwest China and mainland Southeast Asia, and the northern end of the railway into Laos. Treat it as somewhere a journey begins rather than somewhere a journey stops.
What is the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework?#
The agreement setting global biodiversity targets to 2030, adopted in the early hours of 19 December 2022 at the second stage of COP15 in Montreal, with China's Minister of Ecology and Environment as COP15 President. It carries Kunming's name because the conference's first stage was held there in 2021.
Which Kunming station do I need?#
Usually Kunming South, which handles the high-speed network and the international trains to Laos. Kunming station is the older central one. They are some distance apart, so check the ticket rather than the city name, especially for a train to Jianshui or a departure for Vientiane.
